"I remember little enough of the accident; one second I pedalled easily along a fairly quiet country lane and the next, without any warning, a car turned into a gravel drive and caught my front wheel and sent me flying over the handlebars. In that microsecond two things registered in my mind; the horrified face of a blonde, curly haired woman staring out of the passenger-side window, and the knowledge that my head would hit the car's front wheel arch and I hoped my helmet would withstand the impact. It did, but by some quirk of fate, my right temple hit the arch a fraction of an inch below the helmet. I didn't know that until several hours later, in fact I knew nothing more until I came to in the hospital and saw the tearful face of Kate, my 14, near 15 year old daughter, sitting at my bedside," Mike explained to the policeman.

Lynda Cresswell and her daughter Michelle attended the wedding of a cousin and were invited to the reception at the local pub afterwards. For Lynda the event had a snob social value even though it brought back memories of her husband who'd died three months previously after nearly 50 years of marriage. It hadn't been the most harmonious marriage but she sorely missed having her husband around to do the chores; having someone to chivvy and be subservient to her wishes. She tried to persuade her daughter to live with her but, knowing what life would be like if she returned to her mother's home and having lived separate lives for many years, Michelle adamantly refused but she did agree to attend the wedding as the `designated driver'. In many ways, the church ceremony gave her time to reflect on her life and Michelle's thoughts turned to the failed relationship she'd had with James Burton for six years before splitting up two years ago. "Will I ever find the right man to wed?" she asked herself several times during the marriage service, "If I don't find the right man soon, it will be too late to have children. I'm 32 now so I probably have another eight years before I need to worry on that score."

"I'm driving," Lynda yelled and refused to hand over the car keys. Because of the limited parking at the pub, they had car-pooled.

"You've had too much to drink and you designated me as driver and I've been off the booze the whole time while you've been downing the vodkas like water."

The altercation went on for several minutes with Lynda becoming increasingly angry and obstinately refusing to hand over the keys, "If you don't want to ride with me, walk or get a taxi." Thinking she might somehow be able to ward off any of her mother's driving errors from the passenger seat, Michelle got into the car.

Harry Kessler and his assistant and driver, Bert Hines, videoed the wedding and the reception and saw Mrs. Cresswell leave when packing their gear in the car. "Stupid bossy bitch can hardly walk but refuses to give her daughter the keys, might be an idea to leave the camera out, Bert, we may get some footage that's worth a bob or two," Harry suggested. Seeing her make a hash of getting out of the car park, he told Bert to follow while he filmed and when she had several near accidents in the first half mile and almost missed the turn to Plegford Lane, a quiet country road, Bert called the police and kept up a running commentary. "She's turned into Plegford Lane on wrong side of the road, less traffic so she might get away with it; car's swinging wildly from one side of the road to the other. Christ, just missed that van coming our way. We're about three-quarters of a mile along the lane now and there's a cyclist in his fancy colourful Lycra gear ahead, thank God, she's pulling out to pass. Oh no, she's suddenly swung into a drive; there's rubber skid marks on the road. She's hit the cyclist and he's gone over the handlebars and his helmet's hit the car. The bike wheel is caught under the rear wheel but the car isn't stopping, it's dragging the cyclist along the gravel drive. Send an ambulance quick."

Unsteadily Lynda gets out of the car, sways towards the house, yelling abusively for her daughter to open the house door because she couldn't find her key forgetting that it was on the key ring she'd left in the ignition and not in the least concerned about the cyclist's welfare. Ignoring her mother, Michelle starts to open the passenger side door but, seeing it will hit the injured man, clambers out the driver's side, runs around the front of the vehicle and cradles him to her body.

In her statement she told the police, "I talked to him regardless of his not replying because somewhere I read that people in a coma subconsciously hear and take in things said to them without responding. Blood flowed from his head and from his legs where the gravel had not only torn the skin but also dragged down and shredded the front of his shorts. I kept trying to soothe him while a man from a car following us, Bert, he introduced himself, freed the handlebars from where they'd caught the sleeve of the cyclist's sweatshirt and gently turned him to a less twisted position on his back and we saw the extent of the lacerations to his legs, thighs and penis. Gravel and dirt stuck to the blood and it all looked awful and I hoped most were surface cuts and no bones were broken. His legs and arms looked to be in the right positions. Luckily, if you can call it luck, the handlebars that hooked his shirt, kept his face above the ground and saved it from being scratched. Fortunately, I'm not squeamish and didn't freak out at the sight of all the blood and continued to speak to the man. Harry, the other occupant of the car, the man with the camera, asked if I knew the identity of the cyclist but I had no more knowledge than they but I said it looked like he had a wallet in his back pocket."

Already alerted, the police arrived in a very short time, the ambulance came soon after and the medics took over. Michelle continued to cradle him until the paramedics completed checking his injuries and stretchered him into the ambulance and when the police took the wallet and read out man's identity loud enough for the paramedics and everyone to hear, "Michael Carter, 23 Bignall Close, Newton," she mentally noted the details.

Kate called out, "He's awake," and a nurse came followed by a doctor. They asked questions but with his head throbbing and everything somewhat out of focus, Michael lay still and only muttered a few words but responded when his daughter Kate squeezed his hand, by squeezing hers, bringing a relieved smile to her face. Only then did he notice the curly haired blonde in the background but soon drifted off to sleep again.

"How do you feel, Michael?" the nurse asked when he woke some time in the early hours of the morning and heard the bleep of the monitor and felt the wires tethering him to it.

"Groggy, thirsty, need to pee," he croaked the words but she understood.

Placing a carton of juice his hands, she pulled the blankets back and carefully inserted his penis into the urine bottle, "Sorry, I'll have to do this for you because we don't want the bandages to get wet. Your shorts got dragged down and your pecker got a bit scratched and we've put bandages around the shaft so no getting an erection," she smiled at him, "They bandaged it so the end is clear and you won't need a catheter." Bandages almost covered both legs and a crepe one bound the sprain on his right wrist and she explained, "The car dragged you along the gravel and the front of your legs took the brunt of it, you've lost a lot of skin but nothing's broken. Nothing that won't heal okay but it will take a while and your legs will feel raw and sore until then; it's the lump on your head the doctors are worried about but they were less worried at their last visit."

The police visited during the morning but weren't surprised when he couldn't remember anything and only confirmed his name and details as being Michael Carter, 36 years old and living at 23 Bignall Close, Newton. "At least I can remember that, so I haven't lost my memory," Michael reasoned, "I wonder what will happen to the woman who knocked me down? The police said they'd arrested 71-year-old, Lynda Cresswell, and charged her with drink driving but wouldn't say any more."

By the afternoon visiting time, he felt perkier and when Kate came with the blonde, she introduced, "Dad, this is Michelle Cresswell, her mother drove the car that hit you. Shelley, this is Mike, my Dad."

Michelle touched his hand and said "Hi," and apologised for her mother. "I tried to stop her driving but she doesn't accept no for an answer, not ever. She'll have to now. The police are still holding her and will almost certainly take her license until the court hearing."

"How do you know Kate?"

"I came here last night to see how badly you were injured and she was pretty upset so I drove her home and arranged to bring her today. She cried on the way so and I spent a little while with her until she calmed down again. I don't live too far from you, much closer than mother."

"I came on the bus the first time because Gran and Granddad were out when I got the phone call but they will bring me tonight and Nanny and Granddad Bob are on holiday. Shelley saved me going home alone. Is there anything you want Dad?"

"Some clothes would be nice, better be shorts, my baggy ones, with the state of my legs."

They discharged him from hospital after four days and Michelle came twice during that time but after the second time, the police advised her to keep away because of her relationship with the defendant. A visiting nurse changed the bandages daily and Kate washed him until the wrist bandage finally came off.

At home after the police warning, Michelle's thoughts centred on Michael and interspersed them with the agro her mother gave her concerning him. "He's just a nobody and should have been looking out for my signals and now they accuse me of drunken driving and other things when he had no business joy riding on a road meant for cars." Getting fed-up with her mother's bigoted attitude, several times she refused to answer her calls and concentrated on what she knew of Michael and the possibility of him becoming a future husband. "I enjoyed the time I spent with him at the hospital and Kate and I seemed to click and have a rapport and I wouldn't mind having her as a daughter, or maybe as a young sister, at least I was able to calm her when she broke down after the hospital visit. Once this court case is over, I'll try to contact them again and see how things pan out."

The case went to Crown Court and only then did details of the events that led to his accident and Lynda's arrest become clear. Surprisingly, given her age, the judge gave her a 24 month jail sentence, a large fine, took her driving license away for five years and she'd have to re-take her driving test before being allowed to drive again. He awarded Mike nearly 10,000 in damages even though he'd refused to have anything to do with the ambulance chasing lawyers. The police added other charges, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and causing further injury by not doing so, and failing to report the accident, so perhaps the sentence could be considered lenient.

Mike had a couple of weeks off work and for a month couldn't drive to the print studio but they sent a van for him each day and brought him home when, in the early days of his return, his head could no longer watch the computer screen without an increase in pain. Kate and he became very close partly because he needed her help with household chores and initially with washing and once the bandages were removed, rubbing cream into his legs and the back of his right thigh; with the skin being tight and stiff with scabs and scar tissue, he couldn't bend his legs sufficiently to do it myself without a lot of pain. She saw his prick and balls a number of times but neither she nor he remarked on it and each tried to treat her as a nurse and ignore any sexual feelings they might have. The lump on his head went down and the bruise around it slowly faded but he had to take painkillers for a while because of the lingering headaches. They weren't short of help; his workmates and cycling friends dropped by and did chores that Kate couldn't manage and his parents and the parents of his ex wife were a godsend too and took him to hospital appointments and invited them for meals.

"You still think about Shelley, don't you, Dad?" Kate asked as they sat quietly in front of the TV one evening.

"Yes, I do, which is surprising since I saw her so few times. The picture of her looking out of the car window as I flashed by before hitting the ground, comes back to me at nights. I haven't seen her to speak to for weeks and only glimpsed her at the trial. I know she cried when the judge announced the sentence but I didn't go to her because I thought in a way, she might think I came to gloat over her mother's misfortune and she had others around her. I doubt she'd want to see me now, not with me not being fully fit and scars over my legs."

"Hello, Kate, hi Mike, how are you doing now?" Mike turned from his early Saturday morning visit to the greengrocery stall at the market and there she stood, smiling and yet with a concerned look on her face.

"Fine Shelley, more or less back to normal and active again. Just getting a few vegetables for the weekend."

"We're going sailing Shell, for the first time since... with this wind, it will be a wet trip but it's more exciting when there's waves to plough through," Kate piped up and then added, "Would you like to come? I'm sure Dad will like to see and talk to you again." Mike glared at her but she went on, "Well it's about time you looked for someone else now Mum has permanent residence in the States and your divorce will be final shortly..."

Michelle interrupted before Kate went any deeper into relationships, "I haven't sailed since James left. Can you use a rookie crewmember?"

Inwardly pleased she had accepted the invitation because he actually wanted to know Michelle better but didn't want Kate pushing the issue, he asked, "Can you get to our house by 9.30? Bring some dry clothes for when we get back, we've lifejackets and waterproofs but they only keep a little rain out and not wind driven spray, not when this young lady is at the helm and does her best to drench us," Mike grinned at his daughter.

"I can't help it if you stand right where the water comes aboard. Would you like to have dinner with us Shell?"

Knowing Kate again pushed his relationship he countered, "Kate's doing the cooking."

"I'm showering first," Kate threw her waterproofs haphazardly on the utility room floor and headed for the stairs.

"You should offer the shower to our guest first."

"Not likely, there's only enough water for two good showers in a row so you two will have to shower together. I saw you eyeing each other when we sat in the cabin at lunch and I guessed you mentally undressed each other, now's your chance to do it for real." Laughing she dashed into the bathroom and locked the door.

"Today's teenagers!" Michelle grinned too as they took their outer clothes off more sedately and draped them where they could dry.

He'd predicted correctly, even their inner clothing was soaked. "I'll find you a dressing gown and you can change in Kate's room, I wouldn't think she'll be too long and hog the water, she's not that inconsiderate."

"If we are showering together, we might as well get changed together, perhaps we should do it in the kitchen where the wet clothes won't spoil the carpet," Michelle surprisingly suggested, "Unless you don't want to," she added. Of course he did but wondered at their relationship taking off so swiftly.

Stripped down to her bra and knickers by the time he returned with the dressing gowns, she had no hesitation in removing these last remaining items in front of him and he took in the sight of her attractive slim body, capped now with wildly curly wet hair that matched the curls on her mound, fair sized breasts with pink nipples and long legs that brought her height near to his 5' 10''. "Your turn to show and tell," she giggled as she pulled the robe around her.

With Michelle watching closely, he'd no chance of hiding his partial erection especially when she reached out and gave it a squeeze. "Nice one, no scar on it and certainly not as messy as when I saw it last," she noticed the disfiguring scars on his legs though and remarked on them but they didn't put her off, not even when told some would be permanent although the smaller ones would largely disappear.

Piling their wet things in the washing machine Mike remarked, "We could get our own back on her if we start it going because the machine will take the hot water from the shower but she'd only find a way of getting back at us and it will restrict the water we have," Mike shrugged and gave up on the idea.

The shower shut off and a few minutes later a towel wrapped Kate dashed to her bedroom, pausing only to yell, "Your turn! There's enough water for one!" She didn't see them both go in but from the noise and laughter they made washing each other, she knew. "I haven't enjoyed a shower like that since I first married," Mike commented. They'd played sexually with each other without actually fucking because of the likelihood of the water turning cold and Kate probably listening next door but Mike barely managed not to have an ejaculation.

Still somewhat bemused by being together and enjoying their newfound closeness, they playfully dried each other and had hardly finished when Kate's bedroom door slammed shut, "I'm off round Pete's for a bit, back before dinner," she yelled through the bathroom door.

"You're supposed to cook the dinner," Mike yelled back but she'd already gone. At the back of his mind he wondered at the possibility of this all being pre-planned; too many things conspired together, but the closeness of his naked partner and his rock hard prick, quickly fogged such thoughts. With Kate gone, they moved into his bed and, after the bathroom frolics, foreplay being unnecessary they fucked without any preparation and to his disappointment, he came after only a short while, but so did she.

Resting quietly, his arm around her, they lay side-by-side, their naked bodies touching for perhaps ten minutes before she suddenly sat up and looked straight into his eyes. "I'm sorry," she apologised, "I'm not really a slut and I've not had any man for over two years. Kate and I arranged this a little over a week ago and today's windy weather and waves helped it along. We didn't plan on that."

"I sorta wondered about being set-up, but I can say I enjoyed it. How did it all come about?"

"Probably it started when I held you on the gravel while waiting for the paramedics to arrive and that is partly why I visited the hospital that evening. I stayed with her for over a couple of hours when we arrived back here trying to calm her down and reassure her. She was very upset and talked about you and I talked about me and we continued to discus our lives the following day on the way to and from visiting you. We met by chance a fortnight ago in Asda and I asked how you were faring and arranged to meet Kate at my home that weekend and drew up schemes to seduce you. You see, I'd confided to Kate that wanted a man in my life again and mentioned that I'd like to know you better and she worries over what will happen to you when she leaves home and goes to college or university so between us we came up with the plan. Originally we would arrive back here reasonably dry and I'd stay for dinner, Kate would disappear so we could chat together and get to know each other. "I doubt he will make the first move," Kate said, "So it will be up to you, Shell, to take the initiative." Getting soaked upped the agenda but I have no regrets. Do you?"

"Definitely not, but I will have a few words to say to my daughter about her handling of my life. It could have gone so wrong."

"Don't be too hard on her, she had your best interest at heart and while we clicked today, we need to get to know each other before we think about long term arrangements. Now shall we go to the next phase of the plan; making dinner? I expect Kate will be back soon and wanting to know how we got on."

"Well, what have you to say for yourself?" Mike accosted Kate as soon as she arrived home.

"Did it work out?" she answered excitedly, "Shell's still here so you didn't have a fight."

He didn't really get an answer from her until Michelle left and they sat in the lounge. "For some time I've been concerned about you living the rest of your life alone and considered introducing you to a number of single women, mothers of my friends, but none seemed suitable until I met Michelle. I liked her and found we could talk like mother and daughter or as sisters and she already appeared to like you. Unfortunately the court case kept me from arranging meetings until it was over. I'd planned to visit her but we met in Asda and we got together again. Please say I didn't do too wrong. I love you Daddy and only wanted to help."

"As it turns out, you didn't but you shouldn't have interfered with my life and as a punishment you will stay here tomorrow and clean the house and dry the life jackets and wet weather gear," Kate made a face, "While I spend the day with Michelle." Her face brightened. "Maybe we'll phone you after we've had some private time and invite you to dinner."

"Make sure she's on the pill, Dad." With that parting remark and a kiss on the cheek, Kate flounced off to bed.
